Christie Announces Nominations for Key Transportation Positions
By Douglas J. Steinhardt, Esq.
Governor-Elect Chris Christie has announced the appointments of Jim Simpson as Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation and James Weinstein as Executive Director of New Jersey Transit. Both Simpson and Weinstein currently hold executive positions at transportation and infrastructure companies and have extensive experience in government, overseeing various agencies that focus on transportation.
Jim Simpson is Chairman of Victory Worldwide Transportation and is Chairman and Co-Founder of Spartan Solutions, an infrastructure management company. Simpson has served at the Federal Transportation Authority, overseeing an annual budget of 10 billion dollars. During his tenure, he oversaw a total of 30 billion dollars in transit construction and awarded nearly 14 million dollars in federal capital grants. Prior to his work with the FTA, he also served briefly as the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Transportation.
Jim Simpson is also a former Commissioner of the New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority. In the aftermath of 9-11, Simpson was the primary New York MTA Board liaison to the Governor’s and Mayor’s offices in coordinating transit activities at the World Trade Center site. Former New York Governor Pataki also appointed him as a member of the New York State Job Development Authority Board.
James Weinstein is Vice President at AECOM, a global engineering and architectural design firm which specializes in transportation, facilities, environmental and energy, and is a former Senior Vice President of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. Under Governor Whitman, Weinstein previously served as Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation. He also served as the Director of the Authorities Unit during Governor Kean’s administration.
Throughout his career, James Weinstein has held numerous positions on boards and commissions, notably serving as Commissioner on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from 1999 to 2001. From 1999 to 2002, he also served as commissioner on the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the New Jersey Highway Authority and the South Jersey Transportation Authority.
Florio, Perrucci, Steinhardt & Fader partner, Doug Steinhardt commented on the appointments of Simpson and Weinstein, “Both Jim Simpson and James Weinstein are well respected individuals with superior credentials. Their combined years of experience, in both government and business, will provide a balanced, real-world approach that is especially needed here in New Jersey in order to advance solutions to our very unique transportation challenges.”
